Freshwater ecosystems, like wetlands, rivers, mangroves and aquifers,
are among the most vital and vibrant parts of our planet. 

They are home to rich biodiversity and provide essential ‘services’ – such as supplying, purifying and safeguarding freshwater resources, defending against flood and drought, generating food, supporting jobs, and storing enormous quantities of carbon dioxide. But these ecosystems are under pressure. Without urgent action to protect and restore freshwater habitats, both nature and people will face increasing risks. As populations grow and climate change intensifies, the United Nations is working with partners around the world to build a more sustainable future – one based on respect for nature.

Impacts of climate change on women and girls

Gender inequality coupled with the climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. It poses threats to the ways of live, livelihoods, health, safety and security for women and girls around the world. Across the world, women depend more on, yet have less access to, natural resources. In many regions women bear a disproportionate responsibility for securing food, water, and fuel. Agriculture is an important employment sector for women, they have to work harder to secure income and resources for their families. This puts pressure on girls, who often have to leave school to help their mothers manage the increased burden.

Rene Mioch

René Mioch is the founder of the Rembrandt Awards (the public award for film and television series since 1992). He is also a guest almost weekly on programs like Shownieuws, Jinek, Beau, Tijd voor Max, and Op1, where he talks about film and the film industry.

Mioch studied at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, which he combined with his job as a radio journalist for the NCRV. Before that, he worked as an intern for the hospital radio station of the St. Lucas Andreas Hospital in Amsterdam, where, as it turned out later, he conducted the last interview with Mathilde Willink on October 24, 1977, the evening before her death.

Starting in 1985, he made television programs about film, including Veronica Film, Films en sterren, and Mioch versus Goderie, together with Jac. Goderie.
