About the film
Thea Beckman and her trilogy Children of Mother Earth, written in 1985, take center stage in the 25-minute documentary The Visionary.
2025 promises to be the year of Thea Beckman and her trilogy. One of the Netherlands’ most beloved works of youth literature is more relevant than ever. Moreover, there is a unique cultural momentum: the new international edition published by Lemniscaat, the premiere of the Children of Mother Earth musical, the recent publication of Beckman’s biography, and the ambitious plans for an international TV series on the scale of Game of Thrones are once again putting her work in the spotlight. This offers a unique opportunity to celebrate her legacy and inspire new generations with her visionary message.
In The Visionary we highlight the milestones of these developments and explore how Beckman’s work is being received not only in the Netherlands, but also internationally – in Scandinavia, Greenland, and the United States.

Children of Mother Earth
Children of Mother Earth is a visionary book that touches on themes such as ecology, feminism, and geopolitics—all still (or perhaps even more so now) highly relevant. Connecting this book to the debate surrounding Greenland, geopolitical interests, and the protection of nature and culture is a powerful approach.
- It combines a literary mission with a pressing social issue.
- It creates a movement, not just a book translation and documentary
- It uses socialmedia and shortfilm, documentary to create
greater impact.
An English translation is available. We are working with Lemniscaat publishers to find an international publisher willing to publish the book and this documentary. We are also looking for ambassadors for the project.
The Dutch edition is available for purchase via this link. If you’d like to be a part of this, let us know. We’ll be launching our video news podcast about the book, and you could be our next guest.
Thea Beckman’s Visionary Book
One of dutch greatest writer, Thea Beckman’s and her visionary book, Children of Mother Earth, is more relevant than ever. In this documentary, we follow the journey of this iconic work and investigate whether the new generation in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Greenland, and the United States will embrace its message. What makes this story, which prioritizes environmental awareness and social values, so powerful and relevant to today’s world? Through interviews with readers, experts, and stakeholders from the world of books, film, and climate change, we explore the impact and potential of a global movement around Beckman’s work. We follow the journey, the musical premiere, and the planned film adaptation of the book and ask the question: Will a new generation, both in the Netherlands and abroad, embrace the book’s message anew?
